MBA 2nd Year

In May 2000, Ms. Alvarez graduated from Wellesley College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Economics.  She first became interested in finance during her summer college internships.  At the First Chicago NBD Corporation (now JP Morgan Chase), she worked with the Non-Earning Assets Team (NEAT), which provides leadership in the campaign for internal cash management.  Several of her duties consisted of researching potential non-earning assets reduction projects throughout the bank, gathering and analyzing data for continuing NEAT projects, and interacting with various parts of management.

Ms. Alvarez applied the skills gained from previous internships while working as an intern at Salomon Smith Barney.  It was at this job that she realized her passion for investments.  This was a most scintillating experience, because she looked forward to going to that job everyday and monitoring the stock market.  She gained efficient research skills, since one of her responsibilities consisted of investigating investments and updating client portfolios.

Her two year tenure in the Municipal Finance division of Standard & Poor’s was the most challenging experience since graduating from Wellesley.  The position she held required using her analytical, research, and organizational skills.  As the months went by, she was given increasingly more responsibility.  She managed several big projects and was in charge of assigning ratings to 90% of the Tender Option Bond (TOB) programs.  Several of the other projects she worked on included analyzing the effects of bank rating changes on structured bond issues, and compiling data and preparing rating presentations for ratings committees.  She developed a keen understanding of a rating process during her time at Standard & Poor’s.  These, and other projects, required close attention to detail and familiarity with financial statements, spreadsheets and legal documents.

Although she enjoyed working in Municipal Finance and gained important skills, Maya is eager to work in Equity Research.  After earning an MBA, she would like to obtain a position as an Equity Research Analyst, because  she would enjoy researching companies, analyzing their financial data and writing stock reports.  Also, she plans to begin preparing for the CFA Level I exam this year.
